Object Name Basket Tray, Winnowing
Description accession register notes "Kiziba winnowing tray"; plain plaited with double elements; interior design: wide purple elements alternating with five narrow natural fiber elements to form two parallel zigzag areas extending completely across the tray; no design on exterior; accession register margin notes "purple is aniline-washes off"; the Kiga winnow grain by tossing it in the air or pouring it into a larger basket on the ground and letting the wind blow away the chaff; each tribe makes trays according to the basketry technique which they use most, in this case, checkweave; the trays are usually plastered cow dung (Trowell and Wachsmann 1953: 99)
